Officials’ certification pathway

An individual can achieve a Level 4 (provincial level) Technical Officials status by satisfying the following conditions.

The candidate:

  1. Must be a current AWA member in good standing

  2. Must have attended a Technical Officials clinic conducted by a Level 3 or higher Technical Official

  3. Must achieve a grade of 85% or higher in the current IWF Technical Officials’ Examination Questionnaire

  4. Must act as referee for at least 66 attempts while being adjudicated by a Level 3 or higher Technical Official and achieve a grade of 80% or higher

  5. Must have completed a weigh in

An individual can achieve a Level 3 (National level) Technical Officials status by satisfying the following conditions.

The Candidate:

  1. Must be a current AWA member in good standing

  2. Must be active as a Category 4 TO for at least one year.

  3. Must pass the WCH Technical Official Examination conducted by a Category 3 (or higher) TO. The passing grade is 85%

  4. Must act as referee at least 100 lifts while being adjudicated at an AWA-sanctioned open or national level competition by a Jury consisting of IWF Category 1 and/or 2 TOs (the lifts must be done within one competition and must consist of the weigh-in; passing grade is 85%)

  5. Must have completed a weigh in

  6. Must Referee at least 6 AWA-sanctioned competitions (or a competition held by a higher governing body)

  7. Must act as a Technical Controller for at least 3 AWA-sanctioned open competitions.

  8. Must act as a Speaker or Marshal for at least 3 AWA-sanctioned open competitions.

  9. Must show competency in all required competition rolls. (AWA to give feedback where improvement may be required)

For a level 3 National Technical Official to be promoted to International Technical Official Category 2, the following conditions must apply.

 The candidates:

 a) Must have served as National Technical Official at least five (5) years

 b) Must be proposed by their respective Member Federation

 c) Must have a complete knowledge of the IWF TCRR 

d) Must prove their competence in a practical examination organised by their respective Member Federation under IWF TCRR 34 / TECHNICAL AND COMPETITION RULES & REGULATIONS 2020 › IWF TECHNICAL AND COMPETITION RULES & REGULATIONS 

e) Must obtain 90% or more in the practical examination 

f) Must obtain 85% or more in the current IWF Technical Officials’ Examination Questionnaire; as prepared and revised by the IWF Technical Committee from time to time.

 NOTE: The percentage marking of examinations of IWF Technical Officials shall be rounded off; e.g. 89.74%=90%, 89.45%=89%.

For an International Technical Official Category 2 to be promoted to International Technical Official Category 1, the following conditions must apply. 

The candidates:

a) Must have served at least two (2) years as a Category 2 Technical Official 

b) Must prove practical competence to three (3) Category 1 Technical Officials during a competition held under IWF TCRR; may be examined at any IWF Event, except World Championships, Olympic Games and Masters Events 

c) Must obtain 95% or more in the practical exam 

d) Must obtain 90% or more in the current IWF Technical Officials’ Examination Questionnaire; as prepared and revised by the IWF Technical Committee from time to time. 

e) Must be able to understand and speak basic English.
