In Weightlifting,

there are five levels of Technical Officials:

category 4 technical official

The first level of officiating is the Alberta Weightlifting Association Provincial Category 4 Technical Official. AWA Category 4 TOs may officiate at provincial club, inter-club and open competitions, including Elite competitions. An AWA Category 4 TO certification remains valid for the duration of the individual’s valid AWA membership.

CATEGORY 3 TECHNICAL OFFICIAL

The second level of officiating is the Weightlifting Canadian Haltérophile (WCH) National Category 3 Technical Official. In addition to the above competitions, WCH Category 3 TOs may officiate at all levels of national competitions. A WCH Category 3 TO certification remains valid for the duration of the individual’s valid AWA membership.

CATEGORY 2 TECHNICAL OFFICIAL

The third level of officiating is the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Category 2 Technical Official. In addition to the above competitions, an IWF Category 2 TO may officiate at all levels of international Events, excluding Olympic Games, Youth Olympic Games, World Championships and Universiades. An IWF Category 2 TO license must be renewed each quadrennial (Olympic cycle) as noted the relevant IWF Technical and Competition Rules & Regulations handbook.

CATEGORY 1 TECHNICAL OFFICIAL

The fourth and most prestigious level of officiating is the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Category 1 Technical Official. In addition to the above competitions, an IWF Category 1 TO may officiate at all levels of international Events, including Olympic Games, Youth Olympic Games, World Championships and Universiades. An IWF Category 1 TO license must be renewed each quadrennial (Olympic cycle) as noted the relevant IWF Technical and Competition Rules & Regulations handbook.

The newly established International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Certificate of Duty makes up the fifth category of officiating. The IWF Certificate of Duty TO is eligible to assist in all levels of international Events, including Olympic Games, Youth Olympic Games, World Championships and Universiades; except in positions where an IWF Category 1 or 2 TO is required according to IWF Technical and Competition Rules & Regulations. (This is an exceptional category and distributed at the discretion of the IWF.)
